A Warming Hut in Storms of Life

When we understand and address the emotions underneath the problem, we can find renewal, confidence, and freedom in our relationships and lives.

A Thoughtful Approach to Real Change

The Warming Hut is more than a metaphor,  it’s an experience.

Picture a small hut in Alaska at the base of a snowy hill, a potbelly stove radiating warmth to thaw cold, tired skiers. It offers refuge and restoration when it’s needed most.

That’s the kind of space I create in my counseling practice.

Here in Colorado, The Warming Hut is a place where emotional warmth melts the cold numbness of conflict, stress, or isolation. As emotions are shared and understood, relationships begin to thaw. Reactivity softens. Clarity emerges. Change becomes possible.

My approach is warm and conversational, but also purposeful. We’ll create a safe space, get clear on what matters most, and work toward real change, one step at a time. You won’t just talk about problems. You’ll leave sessions with insight, direction, and practical tools you can use right away.

Michael Hamerly, Therapist and Chaplain at the Warming Hut

Hi, I’m Michael Hamerly, LPC, CAS

Therapist & Chaplain

My path to becoming a therapist wasn’t a straight line.

Before earning my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and founding The Warming Hut, I spent decades in high-pressure environments that required clarity, steadiness, and mission-focus:

  • Military leadership: As an Air Force Flight Commander and pilot, I learned to lead through crisis and high-stakes moments.

  • Engineering & corporate leadership: As a Director of Engineering, I developed a structured, practical approach to solving complex problems and turning insight into action.

  • Community involvement: As a football coach and Cubmaster, I’ve worked closely with families, resilience, and character development.

But my growth didn’t just happen professionally.

I’ve faced addiction challenges that threatened my own marriage and career. I’ve walked through painful seasons in my family, including raising a child on the autism spectrum. I’ve done the hard work required to preserve and strengthen my own marriage.

I know what it’s like to sit in the storm, not just study it.

Disappointed at times by counselors who felt judgmental or dismissive, I became determined to offer something better: a space rooted in empathy, steadiness, and practical truth. Clients often describe my style as a healthy balance of honesty, “hard love,” and deep compassion.

During seminary, a transformative experience with Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) reshaped how I approach healing. Hospice chaplaincy training further deepened my capacity to sit with people in life’s most vulnerable moments.

Today, I integrate these personal and professional experiences into every session.

For clients who value faith, I thoughtfully integrate spirituality into the counseling process. As a trained chaplain, I understand the sacred dimension of suffering, meaning, and reconciliation,  and I honor each person’s beliefs, whether faith is central to their life or not.
