— A Bicycle With a Story —
In 1982, while temporarily assigned to RAF Mildenhall in England as a U.S. Air Force C-130 pilot, I purchased this ALAN frame from Morley's Bicycle Shop in nearby Mildenhall. At the time, ALAN was known for its innovative bonded aluminum construction and distinctive Italian heritage.
After returning to Texas, I built the bicycle from carefully selected components ordered from cycling catalogs of the day. Throughout the 1980s it was my primary road bike, ridden extensively on Texas farm-to-market roads. It was built to be ridden rather than displayed, and it accumulated many enjoyable miles during those years.
After 1989 the bicycle spent most of its time in storage, emerging occasionally for rides and maintenance. In 2016 it received a tune-up and accompanied me on two Colorado Pedal the Plains tours. More recently, it has been cleaned, refreshed, and prepared for sale while preserving the character and history that make it unique.
Today the bicycle remains a smooth-riding example of an early ALAN road bike and is offered for sale only because my wife and I are shifting our focus toward RV travel and new adventures around the country.
— The Journey —
England (1982)
In 1982, while temporarily assigned to RAF Mildenhall in England as a U.S. Air Force C-130 pilot, I purchased this ALAN frame from Morley's Bicycle Shop in nearby Mildenhall. The original Morley's dealer decal remains on the frame today as a small reminder of where the bicycle's story began.
Texas Years
The bicycle was used for both recreational riding and local racing. One memorable highlight came during an annual running and cycling competition hosted by my C-130 wing, where my team finished first. Most of all, however, the bike accumulated countless enjoyable miles exploring the back roads of Texas during a period when cycling was becoming an important part of my life.
Colorado Years
After 1989 the bicycle spent most of its time in storage, emerging periodically for maintenance and rides. In 2016 it received a tune-up and accompanied me on two Colorado Pedal the Plains tours, proving that even after decades it remained a smooth and enjoyable bicycle to ride.
Why Sell Now?
Today the bicycle is being offered for sale only because my wife and I are shifting our focus toward RV travel and new adventures around the country. Rather than continue to store it, I would like to see it appreciated, ridden, and enjoyed by someone who values both vintage bicycles and the stories they carry with them.
